CATHARSIS
Rape culture normalises sexual violence in our society, particularly in popular culture that glamorizes violence against women and girls. The survivor's narrative overlooked, ignored and the trauma stemming from such experiences can make articulation challenging, leading to a build-up of suppressed sentiments.
Photography enables me to communicate emotions that elude verbalization, speaking the unspeakable. Photos delve into feelings of dissociation, shame, fear and grief capturing the damaged relationship between body and mind.
Catharsis serves as a personal release, navigating the aftermath of rape. Simultaneously reclaiming a narrative that has been erroneously shaped by rape culture. In doing so, it contributes to a broader conversation on the lasting impacts of sexual trauma.
